Illegal software - sin or not?

Well, this could be kinda dumb question, but anyway. What do yo think? Is it sinful to have illegal software on your computer?

A tricky question which

A tricky question which deserves a less glib answer than "thou shalt not steal". Raphink's on the right track with "render unto Caesar what is Caesar's". Jesus was being asked whether to pay taxes to Caesar or not, even though the Jews were under the oppressive rule of the Roman empire. The question wasn't about stealing, but rather whether it is morally right to submit to a human authority not appointed by God, or that even claims divinity itself. The Jews intended to trap Jesus in what they believed was a moral paradox: how can you claim to serve God and Caesar both at once? Jesus made it clear that we can still serve God by giving him what is his, and yet abide by the law by paying taxes to the government, which is its due. The apparent paradox was resolved: what we submit to the state is itself only earthly, whereas what we give to God is spiritual. Now, this can be applied also to free software. In the free software movement, whether we are Christian or not, we have a moral issue with proprietary software licenses. However, we abide by the terms of those licenses because it is the law. It is that same law that gives our free software licenses legitimacy so that others can enjoy the same freedoms we enjoy. If we do not uphold other people's proprietary software licenses, why should we expect others to uphold the law with regards to free software we write? It would be hypocritical. So we "render to Caesar what is Caesars"; we abide by earthly laws governing software licenses, quite outside of the issue of whether those licenses themselves are morally right. But we also render to God what is God's: we write and support free software because it is what he calls us to do. Of course there are limits to application of this scriptural principle. There are corrupt governments and unjust laws, and I don't believe we should blindly uphold them all. But that is a topic well beyond the scope of the original question.

This can be a tricky one, say for example if it was illegal to use firefox, does that make it a sin to use firefox? Technically it is illegal because it is illegal to use. ~ Kopilo =^.^=

"Tell us therefore, What

"Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not? But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why tempt ye me, ye hypocrites? Shew me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a penny. And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription. They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's." (Matt 22:17-21) I think this is clear enough about what Jesus taught us. These software have a price that should be paid. Give this money back to whom it belongs by law. God bless Raphaël

To be honest with you the

To be honest with you the bible says in Exodus 20:15 Thou shalt not steal. If it is illegal software then yes I would think yes God see that as a sin. Beging you have a pice of software that did not come into your ownership by legal means.
