"Convert"

What I like about CE Ubuntu, is that there is a 'convert' script written for converting normal ubuntu to CE Ubuntu. It's humerous and a novelty but was named that way on purpose. Can't wait until someone comes out with an Christian Enlightenment Linux. :D ~ Kopilo =^.^=

Convert scripts

Now the 'convert' script is exactly one of the main things we do not support about Ubuntu CE, and the very reason why we spend a lot of time bothering with metapackages instead. Technically, several projects have experimented the limits of such solutions. They are not innovative, they are just the easiest solution for a quick and easy hack. Ask system administrators around: most of them do such tricks on their systems, until they find out the mess it became once they have 1000 machines to upgrade and keep track of. Sure a 'convert' script is nice and easy (when it works, which is not always the case) in the beginning. But I'm curious to see what it becomes when it's about switching from Ubuntu CE 1.3 converted from Ubuntu Dapper to Ubuntu CE 2.5 based on Edgy... How is that dealt with? How can users be sure it will not break anything, or that it will work at all? As for the Christian Enlightenment Linux, you're heartedly welcome to join and provide enlightenment packages in Ubuntu and Christian metapackages for it. It's all about community and contributive work :) God bless Raphaël

True, but you would be

True, but you would be surprised at how effective and effecient using 'hacks', scripts and all sorts of stuff for single systems can be (I mean take a look at Windows lol). By all means there is no garantee on any operating system, I have a friend who constantly has his a gentoo distribution (installed from stage 3) break stuff on his laptop. You can also never be sure with installing a new system if it is going to recognise all your hardware properly as well. (It's the main reason I didn't install XP SP2 for a long time after it came out, because my graphics card needed upgraded drivers which weren't avaliable). This is why liveCDs are awesome. The convert script definatly isn't the main aim of Ubuntu CE, and I'd imagine that the developer(s) of Ubuntu CE would rather people download and burn the images, that is why they are at the top of the page. (Also they have included a very bold warning about using the convert script). As much as I'd like to create distributions for a Christian Enlightenment Linux, I'm definatly not of that skill level, still fairly much a newb with Linux as a whole. ~ Kopilo =^.^=

As a Linux system

As a Linux system administrator, I know that hacks can be efficient, and I also know how they can break a lot of things. It's not about a garantee of an operating system. Ubuntu is rock solid because it's based on Debian, and one of things that make Debian rock-solid is the use of deb packages together with dpkg/apt. Ignoring this fact is moving 5 years in the past. Making Ubuntu derivatives that ignore the basic principles of what makes Ubuntu rock-solid is antinomic. I totally agree that most people use the iso instead of the convert script, and that does not make me feel better, at all. How are the programs installed on this live CD? Are all the contents packaged as they are in Debian and Ubuntu? What is the traceability of files on this system? Even on the live CD, contents and configuration are installed manually. There is no use of packages. As for you not having the required level to contribute, you'd be surprised to know that none of us knew how to program when we were born, and that 2 years ago I wouldn't have done a tenth of what I can do today :) God bless Raphaël

One thing I just noted about

One thing I just noted about this from reading Distrowatch today was the inclusion of Automatix in Ubnutu CE ver 1.2 I was wondering about its ability to download what might consider "illegal" programs here in U.S. (cc: libdvdcss2) and how that might be a conflict of interest for some.

Yes, you are right. We

Yes, you are right. We warned Jereme about that. As Ubuntu developers, we have reasons not to use Automatix in Ubuntu. Licenses ones, technical ones, etc. Automatix is a dirty hack, aswell as a licensing issue, and I'm sorry Jereme chose to include it in spite of our warnings. As Christians, we ought to respect the law, even when we don't agree with it. Give back to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what is God's. <>< Raphaël

Automatix may enable people

Automatix may enable people to break the law but people may also use it within the law. If people are tempted to use it to 'steal from other people' then they should uninstall it. "And if your hand causes you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to, enter life maimed than with two hands to go to hell, to the unquenchable fire." - Mark 9:43 A hand which was created by God is not naturally sinful. ~ Kopilo =^.^=

Totally agree

This verse exactly confirms our choice as Christians to not include it for legal reasons. There are also technical reasons to not include it by the way :) Raphaël
