squashfs

a few months ago i installed ichthux and used it for a while. i added programs (festival, and some of its speakers, and some more bibles, and some ttf fonts. the livecd doesn't have all the programs i wanted, so i want to remaster the squashfs to add some programs and also a few more bibles and free ttf fonts and configuration for the festival speech synth, the fonts and extra bibles. i don't mind if it is larger than a standard cdrom. i can make it a live dvd. has anyone already done this and posted the method? by the way, i just demoed this for a religion teacher, who was very impressed, and may soon direct himself, his school and his students to ichthux.

Ichthux' impact on Kubuntu + advantages and disadvantages

Hi Richard, I only discovered this project today and I was very pleased to see a Christian open-source initiative! For now I will contribute to your project by praying, but I also consider installing it. There is one thing that is holding me back: I am not so sure that my balanced Kubuntu configuration will be preserved after installing Ichthux. Could you give (a link to) some more information about the way Ichthux is based upon Kubuntu? Will I be able to continue to run all applications I do now, will my settings be preserved, is system speed affected and how is the relationship between Kubuntu-updates and Ichthux-updates? Will my system be up-to-date with the release of Kubuntu-updates just like now or will I (sometimes) have to wait for the Ichthux-project to have dealt with certain issues? In short: I do not have a clear idea yet what the advantages and the drawbacks are. But I'm sure you do, so could you please list the most important? Prayers from Holland (blessings come from above)! Johan

Not a fork

Hi Johan, Ichthux is not a fork of Kubuntu. It uses the same technical options as Kubuntu does, and is directly related to Kubuntu, both technically and socially, since a part of the Ichthux developers are also Kubuntu developers (I am a Kubuntu core developer myself). In Ichthux 6.09, we had a separate repository because it was too late to integrate inside Ubuntu. In this repository, we had additional packages, including a configuration package named ichthux-default-settings, that replaced kubuntu-default-settings with the same options, plus additional ones, by putting everything in /usr/share/kubuntu-default-settings as done in Kubuntu. Since Ichthux 6.10, we are putting all our packages in the Ubuntu repositories. ichthux-default-settings still exists, but it now depends on kubuntu-default-settings inside of replacing it. The Kubuntu specific configuration installed by kubuntu-default-settings is still in /usr/share/kubuntu-default-settings, while ichthux-default-settings adds configuration in /usr/share/ichthux-default-settings, with a greater priority on the latter location. This way, all Kubuntu default settings are set in /usr/share/kubuntu-default-settings by the kubuntu-default-settings packages, and ichthux-default-settings only adds and overwrites a few of them in /usr/share/ichthux-default-settings. This also ensures you to get the latest Kubuntu default settings in Ichthux, automatically, with Ichthux configuration on top of it. Of course, that means if you remove ichthux-default-settings in Ichthux 6.10, you will simply get back to the Kubuntu default settings. As for your tuned configuration, just as Kubuntu does, Ichthux will not touch it. About updates, since Ichthux 6.10 is directly included in Ubuntu Edgy, it will have the official Ubuntu updates when they are released. Even in Ichthux 6.09, that has an additional repository, you still have the Ubuntu official repositories for most programs, so you keep getting the Ubuntu security updates. To say it short: Some Ichthux developers are Ubuntu developers and care to work directly in Ubuntu, so Ichthux will be included in Ubuntu from now on. It thus benefits from Ubuntu repositories, Ubuntu updates, Ubuntu development tools, etc. I hope this answers your question. God bless Raphaël

Ichthubuntu

Well, according to the Ichthux-desktop entry in gnome-apt, I have version 0.3-0 but, according to the entries for artwork-usplash and default-settings, I have version 6.09 ^_^. I'm running Kubuntu 6.06 which I have now renamed Ichthubuntu. I'm assuming new versions will show up in the Kubuntu updater? In faith, Dave dave@christos.cjb.net, dpeirce@christian.net Viva Texas

Hello Dave and welcome

Hello Dave and welcome here, The versions you have are right. The latest version of ichthux-desktop is 0.3-0ichthux5, while the latest version of ichthux-default-settings/ichthux-artwork-usplash is 1:6.09-13. This is so because ichthux-default-settings and ichthux-artwork-usplash define settings that change from a release (in this case, 6.09, aka "Amazing Grace") to another. On the contrary, ichthux-desktop defines a list of programs to be included in the distribution, and this list might not change significatively from a release to the next. Hence why they are not numbered the same. I have been wondering about versionning ichthux-desktop the way ichthux-default-settings is, but I have kept it as such because we do the same in Kubuntu (if you look at the versions of kubuntu-default-settinsg and kubuntu-desktop you will see it). Once you are added the Ichthux repository, you will be told about new versions of packages through adept updater and you will be able to upgrade very simply this way. God bless <>< Raphaël
