Programs to add (and other ideas)

Well I think I will give my input about what could be added to make this better distro. (this is of course only my opinion :)) 1. Firefox Basically since this is probably becoming one of the most recognized web browsers out there (besides IE) Unless you know what Konqueror is, a newcomer might be confused as to how to connect to the Internet. So when a newcomer starts Ichthux for the first time, its there and available. 2. If not Firefox, then Opera? (same reason) 3. I love KDE, (I do like Gnome as well) but I think it wouldnt be bad to lose all the "k's" in front of every program and call it what it is. (maybe I've spent to much time around Linspire and Ive become set in my ways :) 4. Reconfigure the "Launch" button Of course we could be original and instead of replacing the "K" with a Launch, how about a "Begin"? :)

Firefox + extentions

Maybe to make firefox special, it could be shipped out with some extentions. Such as 'Bibleserver.com Suchleiste', 'adblock plus' as well as different search engines such as Biblegateway. ~ Kopilo =^.^=

Add program

I recommend Puppy Linux because of Multisession on CD and DVD.Very good for students,it is posible to write back to DVD/CD like good old Disket.Puppy 2.02 is about only 70MB,and on DVD you have 4.6GB disponible. Per Inge

Hi Per Inge :) I've heard a

Hi Per Inge :) I've heard a lot about Puppy Linux lately. Haven't tried it myself but I've heard it's good. I think it's only a live system though, isn't it? God bless Raphaël

Puppy

Hi Raphael, thank You,it is not only live, can be installed on hard drive to,I hope to have DVD like virituell PC when travel and all my Opera bookmark on it. See : pupweb.org and puppylinux.org/wikka/pageindex Per Inge

Opera

"Last time I checked, opera was not a free software." You might want to check Opera's web site, then, for it has been free for quite some time now. They did away with paying for registering it roughly a year ago.

Sure it is free as in free

Sure it is free as in free beer... but it is not open-source, libre. Hence not included. God bless Raphaël

Dansguardian

I love your ideas for a Christian Distro. I also looked at the Ubuntu "Christian Edition" (a Gnome version) It includes Dansguardian a program that filters websites. I think that would be a great addition for a Christian Distro. Your filter is not automatically filtering out undesirable sites. I would prefer your Distro because it is KDE, please consider adding something like Dansguardian! Bob Wood

Dansguardian? Hear, hear!

I agree with Bob Wood. I have been trying to incorporate Linux into my Computer Lab and classes at our Christian school and NEED easy-to-configure content filtering. (We've had kids accidentally stumble across some nasty sites.) In Windows we can get Cybersitter at a great school rate, but in Linux, there is little to help us. Dansguardian looks great but is NOT easy to add on and configure after downloading. The folks at Ubuntu Christian Edition are onto something, especially with their graphical interface for Dansguardian that's ready-to-run and apparently easy to use, but I'm a Mepis man and hate to give up my KDE. Maybe it's time for some sharing of ideas between these two projects? It could be a real win-win idea -- hey, we're all in this together! Blessings on your good work. Keep it up!

Hi Marty and welcome! As you

Hi Marty and welcome! As you said it, DansGuardian is not easy to configure. This is one of the reasons why we chose to use Willowng instead. Now Willowng is not quite ready, and we're doing our best to have it work easily and powerfully in Ichthux as soon as possible. Thank you for your support. God bless <>< Raphaël

thanks!

Ahhh--that explains the negative review Willowng got...it's not done yet! OK--it sounds like you're working on a winner. That makes three believers i know of working on Linux-compatible content filtering. (The third is the ProCon extension for Firefox, which is also still under development.) I look forward to seeing your finished product. (If anything is ever "finished" in Linux! :-P ) THANK YOU and blessings on your GOOD work!!!!!!!! Marty

+1 for Firefox

It's all well and good tha Konqueror is installed by default, and more standards compliant, but there are extensions in Firefox that I simply cannot live without. Even if you don't include it in the distro I'll just go download and install it anyway. It would be nice for it to be included in the distro itself though. -------------------------------------------------------- Salvation carries a cost, we must prevail Death creeps like the breese but have no fear Watch me inhale ~Sonny Sandoval of P.O.D. on "Six Sirens" by Project86

You can always type "sudo

You can always type "sudo apt-get install firefox" or even just install it from the "Add/Remove Programs" in the K menu.

Thanks for the tip

But I do know how to use apt :) My point was that even if the dev team doesn't include Firefox with Ichthux I'll use it anyway, and I suspect most other people will as well. -------------------------------------------------------- Salvation carries a cost, we must prevail Death creeps like the breese but have no fear Watch me inhale ~Sonny Sandoval of P.O.D. on "Six Sirens" by Project86

Hi macrohard, Thank you for

Hi macrohard, Thank you for your ideas, however: 1. Konqueror is the default browser in Kubuntu. We are not to remove it, and the idea behind Ubuntu/Kubuntu is to provide only one program per task by default. People are free to add to it afterwards. Furthermore, konqueror is faster and more standards-compliant than Firefox, and is easily accessible in the KDE bar. I don't think we need firefox. 2. Last time I checked, opera was not a free software, and we do not intend to include proprietary software by default. Again, people are free to get it and install it if they want, but I would not encourage using it. 3. Linspire hasn't helped KDE much in removing the names from the all the programs. As a result, most people who have used Linspire don't know what programs they have used, or even (which to me is worse) believe Linspire is the author of all of them. I have better to do than renaming all programs, with all the work that means and the conflicts it might provoke. 4. One thing about Windows is that you go to Start when you want to shut the computer down. Do you want the same on Linux, too? Sorry to be answer negatively to all of your suggestions though. God bless <>< Raphaël

I'll take advantage of this

I'll take advantage of this thread to point folks to the ideas at TFP (USA): Freely LS3 Much of what is listed there should already be part of the K/U/Xubuntu distros anyway. However, there are additional apps that churches can make use of that haven't been listed as part of this project. I've discussed this with Raphaël recently, and hope that others might offer input. The major goal of the LS3 is to provide the necessary tools, and make it as easy as possible to configure them - most likely through configuration samples/templates - or something. I do like the idea of reconfiguring the Launch button. However, why not make it the Alpha and Omega symbols? After all, it is the beginning and the end! :-D Blessings, DC Parris Editor-in-Chief LXer.com - The world is talking about GNU/Linux and FOSS

I think it would be great to

I think it would be great to have Lyricue included for ministries that want to use Ichthux for their A/V systems. Since Java will be GPL'ed, I can now feel more comfortable recommending the Java-based apps Asaph/PyAsaph (song database, and the Python-extended version that makes it a lyrics projector. I think Lyricue is preferable, since it is a native Linux app. My 2 bits. DC Parris Editor-in-Chief LXer.com - The world is talking about GNU/Linux and FOSS

Lyricue

Hi Don, I'm currently reviewing Lyricue for inclusion in Ubuntu. Hopefully, it will be in feisty and we will include it in Ichthux :) God bless Raphael

Launch button + (not-yet-existant?) Scripture Memory System

lol, I was thinking to title the launch button 'Genesis', but Alpha Omega would be nice, too :-) For design matters, you could turn the Omega into a jelly-fish in the same subtle style as the Alpha is turned into a fish ;-) Or would it then miss its purpose? What I really haven't found yet is a Scripture Memory System. As far as I know there is only one available: it's free, but... windows-only... :-( Tried Wine, but didn't work out. Would be great if Ichthux could somehow trigger a project to develop such a thing (using Sword) and include it!

BibleMemorizer

Hi Johan and welcome here! BibleMemorizer seems to be quite interesting. It uses Sword and and the Qt graphical API so it exactly fits the needs of Ichthux. Investigating it is on my TODO list, but if you want to have a look, try it and work with upstream you're welcome to do so! God bless Raphaël

Hmmm.....

I do like those Alpha and Omega ideas for the Launch, not bad DC.....
